Study Abroad: Things to Know Before You Go

Studying abroad sounds exciting and fun but it could also be very challenging and scary. You might have contacted some of the alumni from the university, read brochures and gone through all the online reviews and information regarding how your journey is going to be abroad. And although you might think logically that you have got it all covered, there is always that one small voice at the back of the said asking “But do you really?” The truth is that a lot goes on and a lot of preparation is required before you go on this long adventure of international education. If you are also taking up one such journey then you don’t need to worry much. We have got your back with this checklist that you can keep handy while preparing to study abroad.

Make sure you have all the necessary travel documents

You should have an active passport with a valid visa for the destination country in order to travel there. Also, make sure that your student visa covers the entire course period and it should not expire in between as that could create a problem for you and you might have to come back in between your course.

Purchase flight tickets three months in advance

We know that everybody will start asking you to book tickets for flight five to six months before your Journey, but we recommend booking tickets three months prior to your departure because tickets are generally at the lowest price at that time. You can even choose the seat of your choice by web checking in advance.

Keep your valuables safe

You will be carrying lots of valuable possessions while traveling – iPod, jewels, laptop, cash, and your passport. Make sure that you keep these things safe and locked up while traveling and after you reach abroad too. You might not realize this but you will be so distracted in having fun and mingling up on a foreign land that you will not even realize if anything will get misplaced or stolen. So, lock up all your possessions before you leave your dorm.

Talk to your bank

It is always a good idea to carry cash just for traveling along and keep the money in your bank account as you will not have to go through the trouble of currency exchange much once you reach there. Visit the bank in which you have an account and tell them in advance about which country you will be traveling to and which date will you be leaving so that there are no surprises for you if your card gets declined at any of the ATMs abroad.

Medicines and Insurance

If you are already on prescribed medications, then you should visit your doctor to get your medicines stocked for the duration of your program abroad. Do not expect the country you are visiting to have your specific drug ready for you. However, if you encounter any medical emergency abroad then there is no need to panic. You should carry your passport and medical insurance along with you when you visit the hospital and you will surely get proper medical assistance.
